4 Hours is All You Get

No Comments Mental Illness





This morning, I woke to the news of another story focusing on a mental health tragedy.   Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds is currently hospitalized from stab wounds inflicted by his 24 year old son.  The son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, is now deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.


The back-story adds another dimension to the problem that exists today in the world of mental health – that of inadequate resources available for a family in crisis and the lack of common sense that has driven current policies and procedures in dealing with treatment. Read more

On Being Thankful . . .

My holiday season officially began a few weeks ago . . .


KK turned 10 and for the first time in the last several years I was emotionally and mentally capable of sharing the joy of her day.  Throughout the preparations however, there were intermittent pangs of sadness.  Numerous times, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day that she was born; of what my late husband would think of her today; at how she is maturing through beauty and grace; at the joy she brings to our entire family . . . and, at how pissed off I am that he checked out on her, on me and on our entire family.   Read more
